Description

The GR20 is legendary in the trekking world, widely regarded as Europe's toughest long-distance trail. This is not a hike for the faint of heart; it is a sustained and strenuous journey across the granite backbone of Corsica, an island rightly known as the "Mountain in the Sea." The trail rarely descends to valleys, instead staying high on exposed ridges, scrambling over steep, rocky terrain, and demanding significant daily ascents and descents. The path is often rough and unforgiving underfoot, with sections of loose scree, steep slabs requiring the use of hands, and occasional snowfields early in the season.

The trail's unique character stems from this relentless ruggedness combined with the wild beauty of the Corsican interior. It is a journey of stark contrasts, from the jagged peaks and deep forests of the more difficult northern half to the slightly more forgiving but equally spectacular granite towers and plateaus of the south. Unlike the catered comfort of some Alpine treks, the GR20 experience is more rustic. Accommodation is in basic mountain refuges or bivouac tents, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and self-reliance among those who take on the challenge. Completing the GR20 is a true badge of honor for any serious trekker.

Getting There & Back

The GR20 traverses the island of Corsica from Calenzana in the north to Conca in the south. Reaching the trailheads requires multi-modal transport. The most convenient airport for the northern start at Calenzana is Calvi (CLY), from which a taxi or bus can be taken for the final 13 km journey. For the southern terminus at Conca, the nearest airport is Figari (FSC), which requires a bus or taxi via Porto-Vecchio. Many hikers choose to fly into one airport (e.g., Calvi) and out of another (e.g., Figari) to avoid a long transfer across the island. The mid-point at Vizzavona is accessible by train, allowing for hikes of just the northern or southern sections.

Accommodation

Accommodation on the GR20 is primarily in a network of refuges managed by the Corsican Regional Nature Park (PNRC), supplemented by private gîtes or bergeries (shepherds' huts) at some stages. Booking is mandatory.

  • Refuge de Petra Piana: A classic, pyramid-shaped hut perched dramatically on a cliff edge, offering incredible views and a true high-mountain refuge experience.
  • Refuge de Ciottulu di i Mori: The highest mountain hut on the GR20 (1,991 m), providing a spectacular viewpoint over the Golo valley.
  • Auberge U Vallone / Refuge de Tighjettu: Located below the formidable Monte Cinto section, these neighboring refuges serve as a critical base for tackling the highest point of the trek.
