Description
The Fisherman's Trail, or Trilho dos Pescadores, is the spectacular coastal section of Portugal's Rota Vicentina trail network. It follows paths used for centuries by local fishermen to access the best fishing spots along the wild, undeveloped coastline of the Alentejo and Algarve regions. The trail is an intimate encounter with the Atlantic Ocean, winding along the top of dramatic cliffs, descending to hidden coves, and traversing vast expanses of sand dunes. It is a journey through one of the best-preserved coastlines in Southern Europe, protected within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
The trail's defining characteristic is the terrain underfoot: a significant portion of the route, up to 70%, is on soft sand. This makes the walking surprisingly strenuous despite the minimal elevation gain and is a key factor that distinguishes it from other coastal walks. The experience is one of sensory richness—the sound of crashing waves, the scent of coastal herbs, the sight of storks nesting on cliffs, and the taste of fresh seafood in the traditional fishing villages that provide nightly refuge. It offers a unique blend of challenging walking and serene coastal beauty.

Getting There & Back
The Fisherman's Trail is a coastal route in Portugal, running from São Torpes (near Sines) in the Alentejo region to Lagos in the Algarve. The northern trailhead is best accessed from Lisbon airport (LIS). The Rede Expressos bus company runs services from Lisbon to Porto Covo, a popular starting point just south of the official start. The southern terminus in Lagos is best served by Faro airport (FAO). The trail is well-supported by a network of villages, and luggage transfer services are widely available, making a "slackpacking" approach possible for those who wish to walk with a light daypack.
Accommodation
The trail connects a series of charming fishing villages and small towns, each offering a range of guesthouses (alojamentos), small hotels, and hostels.
